Arkansas Derby Racing Roundup

© 2014 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

This weekend, the “Road To The Kentucky Derby” enters into the stretch drive at Oaklawn Park where Tapiture heads a field nine young Thoroughbreds as the 9-5 morning-line favorite in the 78th running of the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1). However, as of this writing, Dick Downey at the Downey Profile reported that trainer Donnie K. von Hemel would scratch Knock Em Flat from the Derby reducing the field to eight.
In six starts, Tapiture has never been out of the money and comes into the Derby for trainer Steve Asmussen with a 2-2-2 record which includes a first-place finish in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) and the Southwest Stakes (G3). In his last race, Tapiture was a tough, half-length runner up to Hoppertunity in the Rebel Stakes (2).
No doubt, Tapiture is a talented young colt, and I look for him to be competitive in the Arkansas Derby (G1).
Of all the horses entered in this race, Conquest Titan (10-1) is the one I’m interested in the most. He comes into the Arkansas Derby (G1) with a 2-1-0 record in seven starts for trainer Mark Casse. Despite his record, I’ve always liked the pedigree of Conquest Titan.
He was my long shot pick in the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last October where he finished a dismal fifth and he was 13th (dead last) in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He showed some promise winning his last race of the season running a mile in 1:35.27 at Churchill Downs on November 30. Overall, as a two year old, Conquest Titan was disappointing.
In his debut as a three year old in the Holy Bull Stakes (G2), Conquest Titan finished second to Cairo Prince and he followed that with a fourth-place finish to Ring Weekend in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2).
My blogging friend J.J. Hysell who writes about the young Thoroughbreds at her In The Money blog has always been keen on Conquest Titan and he tops her top ten list. And, I see that “The Commish” (Greg Johnson) at the Downey Profile also likes Conquest Titan in this race.
Conquest Titan is the best bred colt in this race and his Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile™ is 320.63 making him one of the best bred horses on the Derby Trail. The Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile™ is a tool I use to measure potential and it does not take into account other factors such as the horse’s will to win. Another thing to keep in mind is that horses, for many different reasons, sometimes fail to live up to their potential.
It remains to be seen as to whether Conquest Titan will live up to his breeding. However, if Conquest Titan wins the Arkansas Derby (G1), as a sire-line descendant of the Mr. Prospector Ancestral Herd, he could be very dangerous on the first Saturday in May.
A bullet work out at Churchill Downs could have Conquest Titan ready to run a good race.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert ships Bayern (2-1) in from California in an effort to earn 100 qualifying points and a spot in the Derby starting gate for owner Kaleem Shah Inc.
The Arkansas Derby (G1) will be the first serious class test for Bayern who’s undefeated in two starts by a combined winning margin of 18¼-lengths. Baffert has used this spot before to test his horses. In 2012, he sent Bodemeister to the starting gate with a 1-2-0 record in three starts and he romped across the finish line, a winner by 9½-lengths. Bodemeister went on to finish second to I’ll Have Another in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1).
Bayern has been impressive in his previous two starts but, it remains to be seen if he is a good a horse as Bodemeister was coming into this race. Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens rode Bayern in his previous two starts and he retains the mount in this race.
A recent bullet work could have Bayern ready to run a good race and I look for him to be competitive.
Honorable mention goes to Strong Mandate (9-2) and Ride On Curlin who filled out the exotics in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and they could be a factor in the Arkansas Derby (G1).

The winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1) will receive 100 points while second-place will yield 40 points, the third-place finisher will receive 20 points and the fourth-place finisher will receive 10 points. Here’s a look at the current top 20 list:

Toyota Blue Grass Stakes Racing Roundup

© 2014 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The “Road To The Kentucky Derby” comes to Keeneland racetrack Saturday where an overflow field of 15 horses has been drawn for the 90th running of the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1). Only 14 horses are allowed to run the Blue Grass and Divine Oath is the also eligible entrant. Bobby’s Kitten, owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, is the 3-1 morning line favorite.
Trained by Chad Brown, Bobby’s Kitten comes into the Blue Grass with a 3-0-2 record in five starts, all on the turf, including victories last fall with a 6¼-length romp in the Pilgrim Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park and a third-place finish in the blistering-fast Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Jockey Javier Castellano has ridden Bobby’s Kitten in his last three races and he retains the mount for the Blue Grass. I look for them to be competitive.
The young colt that interests me most in this race is Gala Award (5-1) who was a $1.5 million purchase at the Keeneland 2012 September Yearling Sale for the connections of Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Gala Award comes into the Blue Grass with a 2-1-0 record in three starts, all on the turf. His last prep coming into this race was the 9-furlong Palm Beach Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park which he won, defeating another colt I liked, Mr. Speaker, by a half-length in the blistering time of 1:46.19.
If Gala Award runs anywhere near that time on Saturday, he’s most likely the winner of the Blue Grass Stakes (G1).
And he has the breeding to do that. I still have yet to finalize my research numbers, but Gala Award’s Tesio Index™ is 155.00 and his Ancestral Herd Index™ is 162.50 giving him a Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile™ of 317.50 which is one of the highest profiles of the horses on the Derby Trail.
In last year’s Derby blog, I introduced the Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile™ and, overall, I was pleased with its debut. Since then, I’ve been working on refining it and the numbers for this year’s Derby are producing some interesting results. The Tesio Index™ and his Ancestral Herd Index™ are proprietary key puzzle pieces that comprise the Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile™ which is tool I use to measure potential and it does not take into account other factors such as the horse’s will to win. Another thing to keep in mind is that horses, for many different reasons, sometimes fail to live up to their potential.
Time will tell if Gala Award lives up to his breeding. But, if he wins the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), he’ll be at least a superfecta bet in the Kentucky Derby.
I haven’t analyzed Bobby’s Kitten yet, but he’ll probably have a high profile. It’s a shame that Mr. Speaker, who as a possible for the Blue Grass, was not entered in this race as he had a very high profile, too.
Pablo Del Monte (12-1) is a long shot I like in this race. I wrote about him in my 2014 Kentucky Derby Outlook and ranked him 10th on my Derby Wish List. However, overall, he’s been disappointing. But, both of his only wins were at Keeneland and he comes into this race with a 2-0-1 record in five starts.
I don’t know what Pablo Del Monte’s profile is as I haven’t calculated it. But he has the breeding to be competitive in this race.
Pablo Del Monte is a sire-line descendant of the Northern Dancer Ancestral Herd and he’s bred on a nick with the Nasrullah Ancestral. His nick is very similar to that of Creative Cause who finished fifth in the 2012 Kentucky Derby. However, at the end of his 2-year-old racing season, Creative Cause was farther along in his development than Pablo Del Monte.
Giant’s Causeway, the sire of Pablo Del Monte, was undefeated in three starts as a 2-year-old (all at 7-furlongs) – winning the Group 3 Futurity Stakes and the Group 1 Prix de la Salamandre Stakes. As a 3-year-old, Giant’s Causeway was 6-4-0 in 10 starts, winning from 7- to 10-furlongs, and he was the 2000 Cartier Racing Awards European Horse of the Year.
Bring the Heat, the damsire of Pablo Del Monte, was stakes-placed in the Real Good Deal Stakes and had a 3-1-1 record in seven starts with $121,260 in earnings. In Excess, the second damsire of Pablo Del Monte, was a good router and multiple graded-stakes winner who compiled an 11-2-3 record in 25 starts with $1,736,733 in career earnings. In 1991, In Excess set a new track record of 1:58.33 in the 10-furlong Suburban Handicap (G1), earning a 120 Beyer Speed Figure for that performance.
The stretch out to 9-furlongs is the farthest that Pablo Del Monte has ever run but he has the breeding to handle the distance. He’s been working out good at Keeneland and he could be a big sleeper in this field.
Medal Count (9-2) comes into the Blue Grass for trainer Dale Romans with a 3-0-0 record in six starts including a 1¼-length win in the Transylvania Stakes (G3) at Keeneland last weekend. Of Medal Count’s three wins, two have been since January and it looks like he could be getting good at the right time of year.
If Medal Count repeats his form in winning the Transylvania, I look for him to be competitive in the Blue Grass.
Honorable mention goes to So Lonesome (50-1) who finished ninth to Gala Award in the Palm Beach Stakes (G3). His finish time in that race would make him competitive in this field and a recent bullet work out, his only bullet, could have him ready to run a good race at a nice price.

The winner of the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) will receive 100 points while second-place will yield 40 points, the third-place finisher will receive 20 points and the fourth-place finisher will receive 10 points. Here’s a look at the current top 20 list:

Santa Anita Derby Racing Roundup

© 2014 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

A field of only eight young Thoroughbreds will go to the post Saturday in the 77th running of the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita Park. Post time is 6:30 p.m., ET and live coverage of the race, as well as the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1), will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network beginning at 5:30 p.m., ET. Let’s take a look at the Derby.
California Chrome has been installed as the early 6-5 morning-line favorite and by all appearances he looks like the horse to beat. In nine starts he’s only finished off the board three times and he comes into the Derby with a 5-1-0 record. Almost all of his races have been in stakes competition and his last three races were blowout victories.
There’s no doubt that California Chrome is a talented, fast colt. In his last race, he put on a superb performance winning the San Felipe Stakes (G2), in front-running style, by 7¼-lengths. The mile split for that race was a blistering 1:33.94 and his finish time of 1:40.59 is several ticks faster the speedster Social Inclusion who’s also running this weekend in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1).
I look for California Chrome to be competitive in the Derby but the one question I have for all of these speed horses is how well they will finish after running 9-furlongs.
Candy Boy (9-5) is also another fast horse who comes into this race with 2-2-0 record in six starts for trainer John Sadler. Candy Boy is a fast colt, too. His finish time of 1:41.83 in the 8½-furlong Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) is the kind of time I like to see a young colt on the Derby Trail.
However, unlike California Chrome, Candy Boy likes to come from off the pace. I look for him to be competitive and I’ll be watching to see how well he finishes the race.
Hoppertunity, the 3-1 third-choice on the morning line, is the colt who interests me most in this race. He comes into the Derby with 2-0-0 record for Hall of Fame Trainer Bob Baffert and owners Karl Watson, Michael Pegram and Paul Weitman.
While Hoppertunity does not possess fast speed like California Chrome, he does have good speed and his breeding indicates that the stretch out to 9-furlongs will not be a problem for the son of Any Given Saturday who also was a competitive middle-distance horse.
On the Derby Trail in 2007, Any Given Saturday finished third in the Wood Memorial Stakes en route to an eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Later in the season, Any Given Saturday went on to win the Haskell Invitational (G1) and Brooklyn Handicap (G2), both at 9-furlongs.
Unaccounted For, the damsire of Hoppertunity, was a multiple graded stakes winner who was competitive from 9 to 10 furlongs. His most notable stakes wins at 9 furlongs was in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and Whitney Handicap (G1). In 10-furlongs competition, Unaccounted For finished second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
Jockey Mike Smith rode Hoppertunity in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and he retains the mount in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). I look for both to be competitive in this race.
A couple of interesting-looking long shots I like in the Derby are Big Tire (20-1) and Schoolofhardrocks (10-1).
Big Tire has yet to run in stakes competition and he comes into this race with a 1-2-0 record in six starts for trainer Mark Glatt and owners Donkey Island Racing LLC and Halo Farms. After six attempts, Big Tire finally broke his maiden in his last race by a narrow nose victory. The final time of 1:35.52 is right in the ball park of what I like to see a young colt run on the Derby Trail.
With Candy Ride as his sire and Giant’s Causeway as his damsire, Big Tire should be able to handle the stretch out to 9 furlongs and, perhaps, spring an upset at a nice price.
The tail-female line of Big Tire descends from the Reines-de-Course mare and Matriarch of the Turf Rough Shod in the sixth generation who was an important influence in the pedigrees of Lt. Stevens, Ridan, Moccasin, Gambetta, Thong, Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells, Montjeu, Galileo, Miesque, Peteski, Peintre Celebre, Big Brown and Unusual Heat to name a few.
Schoolofhardrocks comes into this race off of a fourth-place finish in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) and another move forward could make him competitive.
