Holy Bull Stakes Racing Roundup

©2020 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us coast to coast Saturday with prep races in New York, California and Florida.
At Gulfstream Park in Hallendale, Florida, TIZ THE LAW will go to the starting gate as the 3-5 morning-line favorite in the 30th running of the $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3). Post time is 5:04 p.m. ET.
Tiz the Law comes into this race with a 2-0-1 record in three starts for trainer Barclay Tagg including a third-place finish in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2). Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

TIZ THE LAW stalked the pace early while pocketed, waited for room along the far turn and in the upper stretch, was asked near the three sixteenths, under a long drive while on the inside of the winner late, did not have enough in the final stages and lost the place spot.

Tiz the Law was behind horses on the far turn but found and opening late in the stretch to narrowly get up for third just three quarters of a length shy of victory.
Constitution, the sire of Tiz the Law, didn’t race until he was three years old but was a competitive runner that compiled a 4 -0-1 record in eight starts with $1,031,596 in career earnings.
Despite the late start, Constitution showed promise and was undefeated in three starts including a win the Florida Derby (G1). But a hairline fracture kept him out of the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1). He came back eight months later to close the season with a third-place finish in the Clark Handicap (G1).
At the age of four, Constitution was 1-0-0 in three starts with a win in the Donn Handicap (G1).
As a stallion, Constitution’s first runners are two years old in 2019 and, in addition to Tiz the Law, a couple of his best runners on the Kentucky Derby Trail are Independence Hall, By Your Side and Gouverneur Morris.
Tiz the Law has a D Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this small herd of runners.
TOLEDO (7-2) comes into this race with a 1-2-0 record in three starts for trainer Chad Brown including a second-place finish last out. Here’s the video and chart call:

The latter [TOLEDO] encountered some early traffic, gained clearance and moved up menacingly four wide late on the turn, had dead aim on the leader into the stretch but made no further gains a pole clear of the rest.

Toledo made a nice move on the far turn to secure second but could not gain on the eventual winner, Ete Indien.
Into Mischief, the sire of Toledo, was a precocious colt and multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 3-3-0 record in six starts with $597,080 in career earnings.
As a two-year-old, Into Mischief easily won his maiden debut by 2½ lengths at Santa Anita Park on October 21, 2007. He went on to finish second in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) and followed that with a win in the 8½-furlong CashCall Futurity (G1). His finish time of 1:40.82 was just a few ticks off of the record time of 1:40.74 set by Afternoon Deelites and the second fastest time of 1:40.78 set by Valiant Nature.
In his debut as a three-year-old in February 2008, Into Mischief finished second to Georgie Boy in the San Vicente Stakes (G2). He came out of that race with an injury to his right-hind foot and he was taken off the Triple Crown Trail.
After an extended break, Into Mischief returned to racing in October winning the Damascus Stakes by two lengths. In December, Into Mischief finished his racing season with a second-place finish in the Malibu Stakes (G1).
Into Mischief’s best runners on the Kentucky Derby Trail have been Audible, Goldencents, Practical Joke, Vyjack and Vicar’s in Trouble. Audible won the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) and Florida Derby (G1) en route to a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Goldencents won the Santa Anita Derby and finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Practical Joke finished second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and fifth in the Derby. Vyjack finished third in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) and 18th in the Derby. Vicar’s in Trouble won the Louisiana Derby and finished 19th in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Harlan’s Holiday, the grandsire of Audible, won the Florida Derby (G1), Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Toledo has an E Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this race.
ETE INDIEN (6-1) comes into this race with a 2-0-0 record in three starts for trainer Patrick Biancone including a win last out. Here’s the video and chart call:

ETE INDIEN vied early inside rivals, drew clear around the turn shifting off the inside, drifted out steadily through the stretch on the wrong lead but kept TOLEDO at bay.

Ete Indien took an early lead and never trailed to improve his record to two wins in a final time of 1:35.07.
Ete Indien has an F Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this race.
Honorable mention goes to Clear Destination (20-1) who comes into the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) off an impressive four-length win (video) last out. He’s making a big step up in class and ships in from Woodbine for trainer Ashlee Brnjas.
With a C Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Clear Destination is the best-bred runner in this herd and he has the breeding to, potentially, upset at a nice price.

Withers Stakes Racing Roundup

©2020 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us coast to coast Saturday with prep races in New York, California and Florida.
At Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, New York, SHOTSKI will go to the starting gate as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the 140th running of the $250,000 Withers Stakes (G3). Post time is 4:25 p.m. ET.
Shotski comes into this race with a 2-0-0 record in four starts for trainer Jeremiah O’Dwyer including a win in the Remsen Stakes last December. Here’s the video and chart call:

SHOTSKI off to a sharp beginning, made it into the two path prior to arriving at the end of the homestretch, was held in reserve disputing the pace with CHASE TRACKER, cleared that foe and got guided onto the inside route midpoint on the backstretch, showed the way with PRINCE JAMES having assumed the role of primary pursuer from the outside, staved that foe off, was in the final stages of the run around the far turn when called upon for more, responded, enough so as to start the final furlong in possession of his largest lead, saw the runner up whittle away at the deficit in the last eighth, held on well enough long enough to stay in the clear.

Shotski took the lead on the first turn and never trailed to win by a half length over Ajaaweed at the wire.
Blame, the sire of Shotski, was a multiple graded stakes winner that never finished out of the money in 13 starts, compiling a 9-2-2 record with $4,368,214 in career earnings.
At the age of two, Blame was 1-0-1 in two starts in maiden special weight competition.
In June of his season debut as a three-year-old, Blame finished third in an allowance race at Churchill Downs and went on to compile a 4-1-1 record in six starts with wins in the Curlin Stakes, Fayette Stakes (G2) and Clark Handicap (G2). He finished second in the Super Derby (G2).
As a four-year-old, Blame was 4-1-0 in five starts with wins in the William Donald Schaefer Stakes (G3), Stephen Foster Handicap (G1), Whitney Handicap (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic Stakes (G1) where he upset favored Zenyatta by head. Blame finished second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1).
Shotski has a C Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and his Behavior Index makes him competitive in this race.
MAX PLAYER (9-2) comes into this race with a 1-1-0 record in two starts for trainer Linda Rice including a maiden win last out at Parx. Here’s the video and chart call:

MAX PLAYER raced off the pace inside, moved off the rail on the backside, made a strong four wide bid on the far turn, dueled briefly, took over and drew clear under urging.

Max Player ran toward the back of the herd to the far turn then made a three-wide move to take the lead and pull away to win by 4¼ lengths.
Honor Code, the sire of Max Player, was a multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 6-2-2 record in 11 starts with $2,518,260 in career earnings.
As a two-year-old, Honor Code was 2-1-0 in three starts with wins in the Foxwoods Champagne Stakes (G1) and Remsen Stakes (G2).
Honor Code finished third in his season debut as a three-year-old, but an injury knocked him off the Kentucky Derby Trail.
At the age of four, Honor Code was 3-0-2 in six starts with wins in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2), NYRA.com Metropolitan Handicap (G1) and Whitney Stakes (G1). He finished third in the Kelso Handicap (G2) and Breeders’ Cup Classic Stakes (G1).
Max Player is a colt we profiled (Hip 929) at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and he has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®. Max Player has the breeding to win this race and time will tell if he can step up in class to earn graded stakes honors.
MONDAY MORNING QB (4-1) comes into this race for trainer Robert Reid, Jr. off a win in the Heft Stakes. Here’s the video and chart call:

MONDAY MORNING QB, rated four deep leaving the backstretch, circled horses on the turn, moved in to the three path approaching the stretch, gained command near the three sixteenths pole, remained on his left lead and prevailed under stout encouragement.

Monday Morning QB tracked the leaders to the far turn where he took the lead and held on to win by three quarters of a length at the wire over New Commission.
Imagining, the sire of Monday Morning QB, was a multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 9-5-2 record in 26 starts with $1,177,394 in career earnings.
Imagining did not race as a two-year-old but proved to be a durable runner that raced until the age of seven.
In July of his season debut as three-year-old, he finished second in a maiden special weight race and went on to compile a 1-3-0 record in five starts with a second-place finish in the Hollywood Derby (G1).
As a four-year-old, Imagining made three starts with two wins in allowance competition and an off-the-board finish in the Nijinsky Stakes (G2).
At the age of five, Imagining was 4-0-0 in six starts with wins in the Idle Rich Stakes, Bowling Game Stakes and Red Smith Handicap (G3).
As a six-year-old, Imagining was 1-2-1 in five starts with a win in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1). He finished second in both the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) and Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1). And, he finished third in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes (G1).
At the age of seven, Imagining was 1-0-1 in six starts with a win in the Pan American Stakes (G3) and a third-place finish in the Bowling Green Handicap (G2).
Monday Morning QB has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and time will tell if he can step up in class to earn graded stakes honors.
A long shot I like is MR. SHORTANDSIMPLE (30-1) who comes into this race with a 2-0-0 record in four starts for trainer Rudy Rodriquez. Here’s the chart call of his last race:

MR. SHORTANDSIMPLE six paths off the inside in pursuit from in range of the duel down the backstretch, tucked four to five wide through the turn, came under coaxing at the five-sixteenths, swung four wide into upper stretch, dug in under a drive closing well steadily outside to issue a challenge through the final sixteenth and was just up in the very last jump to the finish.

Mr. Shortandsimple stepped up over a sloppy track to improve his record to two wins.
Pioneerof the Nile, the sire of Mr. Shortandsimple, was a pretty good middle-distance runner and multiple graded-stakes winner that compiled a 2-0-1 record as a two-year-old including a win in the CashCall Futurity (G1) and a third-place finish in the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1).
As a three-year-old, Pioneerof the Nile was 3-0-1 in five starts with wins in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2), San Felipe Stakes (G2) and Santa Anita Derby (G1) in route to a second-place finish in the 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1).
As a stallion, his best runners to date on the Kentucky Derby Trail include Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Classic Empire and Cairo Prince.
Mr. Shortandsimple is a colt we profiled (Hip 1083) at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and he has an B Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®. However, he’ll need to improve his game to earn graded stakes honors.
Honorable mention goes to Portos (3-1).

Robert B. Lewis Stakes Racing Roundup

©2020 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us coast to coast Saturday with prep races in New York, California and Florida.
At Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, THOUSAND WORDS will go to the starting gate as the 4-5 morning line favorite in the 83rd running of the $100,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3). Post time is 6:00 p.m. ET.
Undefeated in two starts, Thousand Words comes into this race for trainer Bob Baffert off a win in the Los Alamitos Futurity Stakes (G2). Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

THOUSAND WORDS stalked outside a rival then bid alongside the pacesetter to duel for the lead, took a short advantage in upper stretch, fought back between horses a furlong out, was briefly headed by the runner-up nearing the sixteenth pole and gamely prevailed under urging.

Chasing fast fractions, Thousand Words tracked the leader to the far turn then took the lead and held on at the wire to win by a neck over Anneau d’Or. The time of 1:36.37 is what I like to see young colts run a mile on the Derby trail.
Pioneerof the Nile, the sire of Thousand Words, was a pretty good middle-distance runner and multiple graded-stakes winner that compiled a 2-0-1 record as a two-year-old including a win in the CashCall Futurity (G1) and a third-place finish in the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1).
Thousand Words has a B Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this race.
A long shot I like in this race is ENCODER (8-1). He comes into the Lewis for trainer John Sadler with a 3-0-0 record in six starts including a win last out in the Eddie Logan Stakes. Here’s the video and chart call:

ENCODER between horses early, stalked a bit off the rail, bid three deep into the stretch to gain the lead, inched clear and drifted in from the whip, kicked away and held under some urging and strong handling.

Running in third place, Encoder stalked the leaders to the far turn then made a three wide move to take the lead and win at the wire in the final time of 1:34.14.
English Channel, the sire of Encoder, was a multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 13-4-1 record in 23 starts with $5,319,028 in career earnings.
English Channel won his only start as a two year old in August of 2004 and made his debut as a three year old in March of 2005 finishing fourth in an Allowance race at Gulfstream Park.
During the rest of the season, English Channel compiled a 4-2-0 record in eight starts with stakes wins in the Woodlawn Stakes, Colonial Turf Club Stakes and the Virginia Derby (G3). He finished second in both the Secretariat Stakes (G1) and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1).
As a four year old, English Channel made seven starts and compiled a 4-0-1 record with stakes wins in the Canadian Turf Handiap, Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1), United Nations Stakes (G1) and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1).
English Channel made seven starts as a five year old and went 4-2-0 with stakes wins in the United Nations Stakes (G1), Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1) and the John Deer Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). He finished second in the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1).
Encoder is a colt we profiled (Hip 1011) at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall 2018 Yearling Sale and he has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®.
I like it that Sadler has been running Encoder mostly in mile races as that has given him a good foundation. Encoder has been training well at Santa Anita and he has room to take another step forward in is first start of the season.
HIGH VELOCITY (3-1) is also trained by Bob Baffert and he comes into this race off a third-place finish in the Los Alamitos Futurity Stakes (G2). Here’s the video and chart call:

HIGH VELOCITY tugged to the early lead and angled in, set the pace inside, dueled along the rail on the backstretch and second turn, fought back inside in the stretch and weakened late.

High Velocity set fast fractions to the far turn and gave way in the stretch to finish third to the victor, Thousand Words.
Quality Road, the sire of High Velocity, easily won his maiden debut, and only race as a two year old, in November of 2008. In his debut as a three year old, he finished second in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park in January. He followed that in February with a 4¼ length win in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and in March, Quality Road ran to a 1¾ length win over Dunkirk in the Florida Derby (G1).
In late April, Quality Road developed a quarter crack on his right front foot and that prevented him from running in the Kentucky Derby. After a three month break, Quality Road returned to racing to win the Amsterdam Stakes (G2).
Quality Road completed his racing career with wins in the Hal’s Hope Stakes (G3), Donn Handicap (G1), Metropolitan Handicap (G1) and Woodward Stakes (G1). He finished third in the Travers Stakes (G1) and second in both the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) and Whitney Handiciap (G1).
High Velocity has D Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this small herd of runners.
Honorable mention goes to Royal Act (15-1) who finished fifth last out in the Eddie Logan Stakes.
