Holy Bull Stakes Racing Roundup

©2019 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us coast to coast Saturday with prep races in New York, California and Florida.
At Gulfstream Park in Hallendale, Florida, MAXIMUS MISCHIEF will go to the starting gate as the even-money, morning-line favorite in the 29th running of the $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Holy Bull Stakes (G2). Post time is 5:13 ET.
Undefeated in three starts, Maximus Mischief comes into this race for trainer Robert Reid off a win in the Remsen Stakes (G2) last out. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

MAXIMUS MISCHIEF away without apparent mishap, attained a prominent position shortly thereafter, was in path two disputing the pace, and would continue at it until the conclusion of the backstretch, slide over into the right border of the inside route after the pace disputed morphed into a one on one contest at the half mile pole, was put to a drive being challenged in earnest by TAX as the frontrunners stepped into the stretch, responded to put away the challenger and edged away, continued onward with willingness to preserve the decision.

Maximus Mischief looked good stepping up to win his first stakes race by 2¼ lengths.
Into Mischief, the sire of Maximus Mischief, was a precocious colt and multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 3-3-0 record in six starts with $597,080 in career earnings.
As a two-year-old, Into Mischief easily won his maiden debut by 2½ lengths at Santa Anita Park on October 21, 2007. He went on to finish second in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) and followed that with a win in the 8½-furlong CashCall Futurity (G1). His finish time of 1:40.82 was just a few ticks off of the record time of 1:40.74 set by Afternoon Deelites and the second fastest time of 1:40.78 set by Valiant Nature.
In his debut as a three-year-old in February 2008, Into Mischief finished second to Georgie Boy in the San Vicente Stakes (G2). He came out of that race with an injury to his right-hind foot and he was taken off the Triple Crown Trail.
After an extended break, Into Mischief returned to racing in October winning the Damascus Stakes by two lengths. In December, Into Mischief finished his racing season with a second-place finish in the Malibu Stakes (G1).
Into Mischief’s best runners on the Kentucky Derby Trail have been Audible, Goldencents, Practical Joke, Vyjack and Vicar’s in Trouble. Audible won the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) and Florida Derby (G1) en route to a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Goldencents won the Santa Anita Derby and finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Practical Joke finished second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and fifth in the Derby. Vyjack finished third in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) and 18th in the Derby. Vicar’s in Trouble won the Louisiana Derby and finished 19th in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Harlan’s Holiday, the grandsire of Audible, won the Florida Derby (G1), Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Maximus Mischief has a low H Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® but his Behavior Index makes him, potentially, competitive in this race.
A long shot I like is HARVEY WALLLBANGER (15-1). He’s never finished worse than second in four starts and comes into this race off a maiden win last November at Churchill Downs. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

HARVEY WALLLBANGER was unhurried early on, fanned into the five path in the far turn, was under a drive down the lane and inched away in the final stages.

Harvey Wallbanger tracked the leaders to the far turn, took the lead at the top of the stretch and prevailed to win by a half length.
Congrats, a full brother to Flatter and the sire of Harvey Wallbanger, did his best running at 8½ furlongs and farther. His most notable stakes wins were the 7½ furlong Ack Ack Handicap, the Alysheba Stakes and San Pasqual Handicap (G2), both at the 8½ furlongs, and he won 9 furlong San Antonio Handicap (G2). In addition, Congrats finished second in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and third in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), both at 10 furlongs.
As a stallion, Congrat’s best runners include Turbulent Descent, Jupiter Gold (AUS), Haveyougoneaway, Polar River, Pat On the Back, I’m Steppin’ It Up, Toasting, Bravo Watchman (AUS) and Top Decile to name a few.
Harvey Wallbanger has an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he was a yearling (Hip 176) we profiled at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale.
A recent bullet workout could have Harvey Wallbanger ready for his debut as a three year old. I look for him to run a good race and, perhaps, upset at nice price.
Undefeated in two starts, FEDERAL CASE (6-1) comes into this race for new trainer Todd Pletcher off an Allowance Optional Claming Race. Here’s the video and chart call:

FEDERAL CASE slightly hopped at start then quickly moved up and applied pace pressure to FROSTED GRACE, continued to force the issue through backstretch racing in two path, readily moved up to race on equal terms with rival midway through turn, could not get by firm holding FROSTED GRACE, kept after rival into stretch, set down under left handed drive and wore down game foe in final strides.

I like the way Federal Case ran with Frosted Grace from the start and dug in in the final strides to prevail by a neck. The final time of 136.42 is what I like to see young colts run on the Kentucky Derby Trail.
Gemologist, the sire of Federal Case, was a multiple graded stakes winner who compiled a 5-0-0 record in seven starts with $794,855 in career earnings.
Undefeated in his first five starts, Gemologist won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) as a two year old and the Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) at the age of three en route to a 16th place finish in the 2012 Kentucky Derby (G1).
A leading first-crop sire in 2016, Gemologist’s best stakes runners to date include Golden Diamond, Mind Reader, Rose to Fame, Xerxes Avenue, Yellow Agate and Theory.
Federal Case has an E Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® but his Behavior Index potentially makes him competitive in this race.
Another long shot I like is COME ON GERRY (20-1) who comes into this race for trainer Dale Romans off a maiden win last out. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

COME ON GERRY cleared to the lead moving inward from the four path around the first turn, showed the way up the backstretch, turned back a challenge from IDENTIFIER around the far turn and into the stretch, and was kept to task.

Come On Gerry led from the start, setting easy fractions, and pulled away in the stretch to win by 2¼ lengths full of run.
Elusive Quality, the sire of Come On Gerry, was a multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 9-3-2 record in 20 starts with $413,284 in career earnings.
Elusive Quality did not race until his season as a three year old when he was 4-3-0 in eight starts with a second-place finish in the King’s Bishop Stakes (G2).
As a four year old, Elusive Quality was 1-0-2 in five starts with a third-place in the Tom Fool Handicap.
At the age of five, Elusive Quality was 4-0-0 in seven starts with wins in the Jaipur Handicap (G3) and Poker Handicap (G3).
Elusive Quality was euthanized in 2018. As a stallion he sired numerous graded stakes winners including Sepoy (AUS), Raven’s Pass, Quality Road, California Heart, Mr. Big and Maryfield as well as Smarty Jones, winner of the 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1).
Come On Gerry has a D Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® but his Behavior Index makes him potentially competitive.
Honorable mention goes to Mihos (5-2) who comes into this race off a win in the Mucho Man Stakes.

Withers Stakes Racing Roundup

©2019 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us coast to coast Saturday with prep races in New York, California and Florida.
At Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, New York, TAX will go to the starting gate as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the 139th running of the $250,000 Withers Stakes (G3). Post time is 4:30 ET.
Tax comes into this race with a 1-1-1 record in three starts including a third-place finish in the Remsen Stakes (G2) last out. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

TAX strung out three wide on the first turn, prompted the pace as the widest of three for a good portion of the trip on the backstretch, shifted slightly closer to the rail as a duel with the winner got ignited at the half mile pole, was two to three wide issuing a stern bid approaching the quarter pole, got staved off then tired in the last eighth.

Tax ran respectably for the new barn of trainer Danny Gargan to finish third in his first run in stakes competition.
Arch, the sire of Tax, was a multiple graded stakes winner that compiled a 5-1-0 record in seven starts with $480,969 in career earnings.
Arch made only one start as a two-year-old easily winning a maiden special weight at Keeneland in October 1997. As a three-year-old, Arch won an allowance race at Keeneland in April 1998 and compiled a 4-1-0 record in six starts including wins in the 10-furlong Super Derby (G1) and the 9½-furlong Fayette Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3).
Arch passed away in 2016 and as a stallion, his best runners include: Instilled Regard, Nyaleti, Arklow, Blame, Grand Arch, Arravale, Hymn Book, Art Trader, Les Arcs, Archarcharch and Pine Island.
Tax has an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he’s the best-bred horse in this herd of seven runners. I look for him to improve in his third in his first start as three year old.
LUCKY LEE (7-2) comes into this race for trainer John Servis with a 2-0-0 record in three starts including an impressive win last November at Parx. Here’s the video and chart call:

LUCKY LEE dictated the pace from the start, traveled in the two path around the bend, drew off from upper stretch and won handily as much the best.

Lucky Lee led from the start and pulled away at the top of the stretch to easily win by 6 lengths.
Flatter, the sire of Lucky Lee, was a decent middle-distance horse who competed, mostly, in maiden and allowance races and in his only stakes start he finished third in the 8½-furlong Washington Park Handicap (G2). But in six starts, Flatter compiled a 4-0-1 record and was a winner from 7½-furlongs to 9-furlongs.
As a stallion, his leading runners include West Coast, Flat Out, Upstart, Kobe’s Back, Taris, Lucy’s Bob Boy, Tar Heel Mom and Apart to name a few.
Lucky Lee has a C Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and that makes him competitive in this herd.
A long shot I like is SIR WINSTON (12-1). He comes into this race for trainer Mark Casse with a 2-0-1 record in five starts including a win in the Display Stakes. Here’s the video and chart call:

SIR WINSTON stalked the pace, closed three-wide on the far turn, was under a strong drive and just clear, came in approaching the top of the stretch, opened up early stretch then held under steady pressure.

Sir Winston stalked the leader in second on the outside to the top of the stretch then took the lead to prevail by one length at the finish.
Awesome Again, the sire of Sir Winston, was a good router and multiple graded-stakes winner that compiled a 9-0-2 record in 12 starts with $4,374,590 in career earnings. He ran his best from a mile to 10 furlongs, and was selected as the 2001 Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee.
As a two-year-old, Awesome Again was unraced but at the age of three, he compiled a 3-0-2 record in six starts with wins in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and the Canadian classic Queen’s Plate Stakes.
As a four year old, Awesome Again was undefeated in six starts with wins in five stakes races including the Stephen Foster Handicap (G2) and Whitney Handicap (G1), both at nine furlongs, and the 10 furlong Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G3), Saratoga Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) and the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic where he defeated the 1997 Kentucky Derby winner, Silver Charm.
Sir Winston has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®.
Honorable mention goes to Admire (15-1) and Moretti (3-1).

Smarty Jones Stakes Racing Roundup

©2019 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us this Friday to Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas where GRAY ATTEMPT will go to the starting gate as the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the 12th running of the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes. Post time is 4:52 p.m. ET.
Gray Attempt comes into this race for trainer William Fires with a 2-0-0 record in three starts including a win in the Sugar Bowl Stakes. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

GRAY ATTEMPT sprinted clear at once, saved ground while setting the pace, responded when set down for the drive and held sway to the wire.

Gray Attempt led from gate to wire and showed good speed in winning his first stakes race.
Graydar, the sire of Gray Attempt, was a multiple graded-stakes winner that compiled a 5-0-1 record in six starts with $841,560 in career earnings.
Graydar did not race until he was three years old and he was 2-0-1 in three starts.
At the age of four, Graydar was undefeated in three starts with wins in the Donn Handicap (G1), New Orleans Handicap (G2) and Kelso Handicap (G2).
Gray Attempt has an E Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® ranking but his Behavior Index could, potentially, move him up to be competitive in the stretch out to a mile.
SUPER STEED (9-2) comes into this race for trainer Larry Jones with a 1-1-0 record in three starts including a fourth-place finish to Gray Attempt in the Sugar Bowl Stakes. Super Steed is much better than his run in the Sugar Bowl and in the race before that he broke his maiden in impressive fashion. Here’s the video and chart call of his maiden win:

SUPER STEED was bumped around and bothered after the start, raced back early on, fanned into the seven path into the turn, rallied into the lane, took over command and drew off late under a steady drive.

Super Steed raced toward the back of the herd until the far turn when he made a wide sweeping move on the outside and pulled away to win by an impressive seven lengths.
Super Saver, the sire of Super Steed, was a multiple graded stakes winner and Classic Champion Thoroughbred that compiled a 3-2-1 record in 10 starts with $1,889,766 in career earnings. In addition, he was my pick to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
As a two year old, Super Saver was 2-1-0 in four starts and finished his racing season with a win in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) making him, along with Street Sense and Nyquist, among a select group of two year olds to win a major end-of-year prep race that went on to victory in the Derby.
As a three year old, Super Saver compiled a 1-1-1 record in six starts with a third-place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and a gutsy second-place finish to Line of David in the Arkansas Derby (G1) in route to victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
As a stallion, Super Saver’s top-five, leading runners include Runhappy, Inside Straight, Competitive Edge, Embellish the Lace and Hedge Fund.
Super Steed has a B Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and I look for him to take another step forward in this first start of the three-year-old season.
A long shot I like is FORLOVEOFCOUNTRY (12-1) who comes into this race for trainer James DiVito with a 2-0-1 record in five starts including a nice win last out at Churchill Downs. Here’s the video and chart call:

FORLOVEOFCOUNTRY tracked the pace early, was on the inside into the lane, took over and inched clear down the lane and held sway in the final stages.

I like the way Forloveofcountry edged through along the rail and got up to win his last race of the two-year-old season in a decent time of 1:37.30.
Sky Mesa, the sire of Forloveofcountry, was a multiple graded-stakes winner that compiled a 3-1-1 record in six starts with $633,076 in career earnings.
As a two-year-old, Sky Mesa was undefeated in three starts with stakes wins in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) and Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G2).
At the age of three, Sky Mesa compiled an 0-1-1 record in three stars with a second-place finish in the Haskell Invitational Handicap (G2) and third-place in the Dwyer Stakes (G2).
As a stallion Sky Mesa’s top-five, leading runners worldwide include General Quarters, Dynamic Sky, Thiskyhasnolimit, Ami’s Mesa and Highland Sky.
Forloveofcountry has a D Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® but his Behavior Index makes him, potentially, competitive in this race.
He’s been training well at Oaklawn Park and he could be ready to take another step forward in his first start of the three-year-old season.
Trained by Paul Holtus, SIX SHOOTER (6-1) comes into this race with a 3-0-3 record in seven starts including a win in the Big Drama Stakes. Here’s the video and chart call:

SIX SHOOTER restrained early while racing in the second flight and saving ground, eased out and moved a bit closer between horses and in some traffic late backstretch, continued to stalk the leaders into the stretch, dropped back to the inside under clever handling when straightened for home, slipped through along the rail to challenge a sixteenth out, proved best under brisk handling late.

In the first start of his three-year-old season, Six Shooter looked good slipping through on the rail to get up and win his first stakes race.
Trappe Shot, the sire of Flip the Coin Jan, raced mostly in sprints from the age of two to four, compiling a 6-2-0 record in 12 starts with $703,884 in career earnings. His best stakes victories were in the six furlongs Waldoboro Stakes, True North Handicap (G2) and he did stretch out to win the 8½ furlong Long Branch Stakes. In other route races, Trappe Shot finished second in the nine-furlong Izod Haskell Invitational (G1) and ninth in the Travers Stakes (G1).
To date, Trappe Shot’s best runners on the Kentucky Derby Trail have been Wild Shot and My Man Sam. As a two-year-old, Wild Shot finished second in the 2016 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) and third in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Stales (G1). As a three-year-old, My Man Sam finished second in the nine furlongs 2016 Toyota Blue Grass (G1) stakes.
Six Shooter has a B Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he’s the second-best bred horse in this herd of runners.
He’s been training well at Oaklawn Park and a recent bullet work out could have him ready to take another step forward in his second start of the season.
Honorable mention goes to Long Range Toddy (4-1) and Bankit (7-2) who ran one, two last out in the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes.
