Epsom Derby: The Importance Of Sire And Dam Lines In The English Classics

Since Nijinsky won the English Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing in 1970, the Northern Dancer sire line has dominated the English classics producing 19 Epsom Derby winners for a 46 percent win percentage. The lines of Nijinsky, Danzig and Sadler’s Wells have been the most dominant with the Nijinsky and Sadler’s Wells sire lines tied with five Epsom Derby winners each.

The Nijinsky sire line produced the Epsom Derby winners: Lammtarra (1995), Generous (1991), Kahyasi (1988), Shahrastani (1986) and Golden Fleece (1982).

The Danzig sire line produced four Epsom Derby winners: Sea The Stars (2009), North Light (2004), Sinndar (2000) and Erhaab (1994).

The Sadler’s Wells sire line produced the Epsom Derby winners: New Approach (2008), Authorized (2007), Motivator (2005), High Chaparral (2002) and Galileo (2001).

Next to Northern Dancer, the Nasrullah sire line ranks second with eight Epsom Derby winners since 1970 for a 20 percent win percentage.

The Mill Reef line of Nasrullah produced five Derby winners: Sir Percy (2006), High Rise (1998), Reference Point (1987), Slip Anchor (1985) and Shirley Heights (1978).

The Blushing Groom line of Nasrullah produced the Epsom Derby winners Quest For Fame (1990) and Nashwan (1989).

In addition to the sire line, the tail-female line of the dam has played an important role in the outcome of the Epsom Derby. Here’s a look at the Epsom Derby winners and their female family:
