Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes Racing Roundup

©2017 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes us to California Saturday where BOLT D’ORO has been tabbed as the 9-5 morning line favorite in the 34th running of the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) at Del Mar racetrack. This young herd of 12 runners is the most talented in recent memory as there are several high-quality colts entered in this race. Post time is 6:58 p.m. ET.
Undefeated in three starts, Bolt d’Oro comes into this race for trainer Mick Ruis off of stakes wins in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and the FrontRunner Stakes (G1). Here’s the video and chart call of the FrontRunner:

BOLT D’ORO stalked between horses then a bit off the rail, bid outside the pacesetter on the second turn, took the lead into the stretch and drew clear under urging.

Bolt d’Oro pulled away in the stretch to win impressively by 7¾ lengths in the final time of 1:43.54.
Medaglia d’Oro, the sire of Bolt d’Oro, was a good middle-distance runner that compiled an 8-7-0 record in 17 starts with $5,754,720 in career earnings. Overall, he had seven wins and five second-place finishes in 14 route races.
Medaglia d’Oro finished second in his only start as a two year old but as a three year old he won the San Felipe Stakes (G2) and finished second in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) in route to the 2002 Derby where he finished in fourth place.
In the Preakness Stakes (G1), Medaglia d’Oro finished eighth but rebounded from that run to finish second in the Belmont Stakes (G1). He went on to complete his racing season as a three year old with wins in the nine-furlong Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and the 10-furlong Travers Stakes (G1).
As a four year old, Medaglia d’Oro won the nine-furlong Strub Stakes (G2), Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and Whitney Handicap (G1). In addition, he finished second in the 10-furlong Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
At the age of five, Medaglia d’Oro won the nine-furlong Donn Handicap (G1) and finished second in the 10-furlong Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (G1
Bolt d’Oro has a B Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and I look for him to run a good race.
The next four horses I’ll mention were my sales picks as yearlings at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Whether they have improved enough to turn the tables on Bolt d’Oro remains to be seen. But, they all have very good breeding and I look for them to run a good race.
SOLOMINI (6-1) comes into this race for Hall of Fame Trainer Bob Baffert with a 1-1-0 record in two starts including a second-place finish to Bolt d’Oro in the FrontRunner Stakes (G1). Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

SOLOMINI four wide into the first turn, stalked three deep then outside a rival leaving the second turn and into the stretch and bested the others.

In just his second start, Solomini looked good earning second-place honors in the FrontRunner (G1) and he has room to improve in his third start of the season.
Curlin, the sire of Solomini, was an outstanding racehorse that compiled an 11-2-2 record in 16 career starts with $10,501,800 in career earnings.
Curlin did not start as a two year old. But, at the age of three, Curlin was 6-1-2 in nine starts with $5,102,800 in earnings including wins in the Rebel Stakes (G3) and Arkansas Derby (G2) en route to a third-place finish in the 2007 Kentucky Derby (G1). He went on to win the Preakness Stakes (G1) and he finished second in the Belmont Stakes (G1).
Other important stakes wins include the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), twice, Dubai World Cup (G1), Stephen Foster Handicap (G1), Woodward Stakes (G1), and the UAE Jaguar Trophy Handicap.
With an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Solomini was a yearling (Hip 662) I liked in session four at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He’s is the best bred colt in this herd and I look for him to run another good race.
FREE DROP BILLY (5-1) comes into this race for trainer Dale Romans with 2-2-0 record in four starts including a second-place finish in both the Sanford Stakes (G3) and Hopeful Stakes (G1), and an impressive four-length win in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Racecourse. Here’s the video and chart call of the Futurity:

FREE DROP BILLY was well placed early along the three path, became pocketed nearing the seven sixteenths pole, shifted into the three path entering the lane, took command of the lead and drew off late under a brisk drive.

In his previous two sprint races Free Drop Billy came up short of victory. But his breeding indicates that he will do better as the races get longer and he did not disappoint stretching out the Futurity to earn Grade One stakes honors.
Union Rags, the sire of Free Drop Billy, was a competitive colt on the trail to the 2012 Kentucky Derby (G1), compiling an overall 5-1-1 record in eight career starts with $1,798,800 in earnings.
As a two year old, Union Rags won the Three Chimneys Saratoga Special (G2) and Champagne (G1) stakes and finished second in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) stakes.
At the age of three, Union Rags won the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) stakes and finished third in the Florida Derby (G1) en route to a seventh-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). He finished his career with a narrow win by a neck over Paynter in the Belmont (G1) stakes.
With an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Free Drop Billy was a yearling (Hip 104) I liked in session one at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He’s been training well and two recent bullet work outs could have Free Drop Billy ready to run his best race yet.
GOOD MAGIC, (8-1) comes into this race for trainer Chad Brown with a 0-2-0 record in two starts including a narrow loss in the Champagne Stakes (G1) to Firenze Fire (6-1) who is also entered in the Juvenile. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

GOOD MAGIC took up position in mid-pack, stalked the three-way pace tussle towards the three path, was set down leaving the five-sixteenths pole and tipped out in preparation for the stretch drive, challenged as the widest of four front runners spinning into the lane, out-fought them all to lead by a slim margin, saw the eventual winner loom boldly in short order, had the lead snatched away, but put a good fight to the wire.

In just his second start, Good Magic looked good to finish second in the one mile Champagne Stakes (G1) and his breeding indicates that he should continue to improve stretching out in distance.
Curlin, the sire of Good Magic, was an outstanding racehorse that compiled an 11-2-2 record in 16 career starts with $10,501,800 in career earnings.
With an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Good Magic was a $1 million session four sale topper at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and he was a yearling (Hip 845) on my sales list.
It remains to be seen if Good Magic can step up in class to win graded stakes honors. However, he has the breeding to be competitive and room to improve in his third start of the season.
I look for Good Magic to run a good race.
HOLLYWOOD STAR comes into this race for trainer Dale Romans with a 1-2-0 record in three starts including a second-place finish in both the Saratoga Special (G2) and Iroquois Stakes (G3. Here’s the video and chart call of the Iroquois:

HOLLYWOOD STAR was well placed early, shifted into the four path in the far turn while making a bid, continued the bid down the lane and was gaining on the winner in the final stages.

Hollywood Star narrowly lost graded stakes honors by three quarters of a length to The Tabulator (20-1) who is also entered in the Juvenile.
Malibu Moon, the sire of Hollywood Star, made only two starts as a two year old, compiling a 1-1-0 record, before a slab fracture ended his racing career.
At stud, Malibu Moon sired the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb. In addition, he’s sired several horses that have been competitive on the Derby trail such as Gormley, Danzig Moon, Mr. Z and Stanford.
With an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Hollywood Star was a yearling (Hip 395) I liked in session two at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
To date, Hollywood Star has yet to live up to his breeding and whether he can step up into the winner’s circle Saturday remains to be seen. But, I look for him to run a good race and continue to improve his form on the Kentucky Derby Trail.
Honorable mention goes to U S Navy Flag (8-1) and the Tabulator. Of all the horses in this race, U S Navy Flag is the most seasoned and if he has a smooth transition to dirt racing he could be tough in the Juvenile.
U S Navy Flag also has an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and, next to Solomini, he’s the second best bred colt in this race.
With a 4-1-2 record in 10 starts for Group One, record-setting trainer Aidan O’Brien, U S Navy Flag comes into this race off of a 2½ length win in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1). Here’s the video and chart call.

This is the sixth consecutive year for Churchill Downs to use a point system to determine eligibility to get into the Kentucky Derby starting gate. A total of 36 races comprise the Road to the Kentucky Derby and a significant change to the schedule is the addition of the Springboard Mile at Remington Park on December 17.
In addition to the Japan road to the Derby which features the Cattleya Sho Stakes (November 25), Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushan Stakes (December 13) and Hayacinth Stakes (February 2018), Churchill Downs has added a European road to Derby glory consisting of seven races: Juddmonte Beresford (September 24), Juddmonte Royal Lodge (September 30), Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (October 1), Racing Post Trophy (October 28, Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes (March 1), Patton (March 2) and the Burradon (March 30).

Racing Post Trophy Stakes Racing Roundup

©2017 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

On Saturday, the European road to the 2017-2018 Kentucky Derby (G1) takes us to Doncaster Racecourse in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England where SAXON WARRIOR has been tabbed as the 9-5 Twinspires.com morning line favorite in the Group One Racing Post Trophy Stakes.
Undefeated in two starts for trainer Aidan O’Brien, Saxon Warrior comes into this race off of an impressive win in the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes (Group 2) at Naas Racecourse in County Kildare, Ireland, on September 24. Here’s the video and chart call:

SAXON WARRIOR tracked leader, travelling smoothly straight, on terms from two furlongs out, led one and one half furlongs out, soon asserted and stayed on well.

In both of his previous starts, Saxon Warrior has won with ease.
Deep Impact, the sire of Saxon Warrior, was a talented Thoroughbred selected twice as Horse of the Year in Japan at the age of three and four. During his racing career, he compiled a 12-1-0 record in 14 starts with $12,825,285 in earnings including numerous graded stakes victories and Japan’s prestigious Thoroughbred Triple Crown.
At stud, Deep Impact is the current leading stallion in Japan, an honor he’s held since 2012. He’s sired numerous graded stakes winners including the champions Deep Brilliante, Kizuna, and Makahiki, winners of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby); Santono Diamond, winner of the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger); Dee Majesty and Al Ain winners of the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas).
With an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Saxon Warrior should run a good race in the Racing Post Trophy Stakes (Group 1) and I look for him to continue to get better as the season progresses.
THE PENTAGON (4-1) comes into this race with two wins in three starts for trainer Aidan O’Brien including a 1¾ lengths win in the Jra Tyros Stakes (Group 2). Here’s the video and chart call:

THE PENTAGON soon raced in third, pushed along into straight, wandered slightly under two furlongs out, second one furlong out, led inside final furlong, stayed on well.

The Pentagon has won by open lengths in his last two starts and with an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® he’s the best bred colt in this race.
Galileo, the sire of The Pentagon, is a Classic Champion Thoroughbred and multiple Group Stakes winner that compiled a 6-1-0 record in eight starts with $2,245,373 in career earnings.
Galileo made only one start as a two year old, easily winning by an impressive 14 lengths.
As a three year old, Galileo won his season debut in the Ballysax Stakes. He followed that with his first Group win in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trail Stakes (Group 3). Galileo then earned classic honors with wins in the Vodafone Epsom Derby (Group 1) and the Budweiser Irish Derby (Group 1). His last group stakes win was in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Group 1).
As a stallion, Galileo currently leads the Top sires of European Stakes winners list with 68 Group One winners and, except for 2010, that’s an honor he’s held since 2009.
Galileo sired numerous Classic Champion Thoroughbreds: Frankel (2,000 Guineas), Australia (Derby), Ruler Of The World (Derby), Magician (Irish 2,000 Guineas), Gleneagles (2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas), The Gurkha (French 2,000 Guineas), Churchill (2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas), Roderic O’Connor (Irish 2,000 Guineas), Treasure Beach (Irish Derby), Capri (Irish Derby, St. Leger), Soldier Of Fortune (Irish Derby), Order Of St George (Irish St. Leger), Cape Blanco (Irish Derby), Sixties Icon (St. Leger) and New Approach (Derby).
The Pentagon has not raced since July, however, despite the three month layoff I look for him to run a good race.
ROARING LION (7-1) is undefeated in three starts for trainer John Gosden and he comes into this race off of a win in Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) at the Newmarket Racecourse Rowley Mile in Suffolk, England. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

ROARING LION tracked leaders, went second two furlongs out, led over one furlong out, ridden and hung badly left inside furlong, just held on.

Kitten’s Joy, the sire of Roaring Lion, was an outstanding router and multiple graded stakes winner who, in three racing seasons, compiled a 9-4-0 record in 14 starts with $2,075,791 in career earnings.
As a two year old, Kitten’s Joy was 2-1-0 in four starts with wins at 8½ and nine furlongs.
At the age of three, Kitten’s Joy was 6-2-0 in eight starts with wins in the Tropical Park Derby (G3), Palm Beach Stakes (G3), Crown Royal American Turf Stakes (G3), Virginia Derby (G3), Secretariat Stakes (G1) and the 12 furlong Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1).
As a four year old, Kitten’s Joy was 1-1-0 in two starts with a win in the Firecracker Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) and a second-place finish in the Arlington Million Stakes (G1).
Roaring Lion has a low Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® score but his Behavior Index makes him competitive and I look for him to run a good race.
VERBAL DEXTERITY (7-2) comes into this race with a 2-1-0 record in three starts for trainer Jim Bolger including a 3½ lengths win in the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Group 1) at the Curragh. Here’s the video and chart call:

VERBAL DEXTERITY led early, close up, on terms halfway, soon led, joined two furlongs out, led again inside final furlong and stayed on best to quickly assert.

Vocalised, the sire of Verbal Dexterity, was a multiple group winner that compiled a 4-0-0 record in 10 starts with $188,432 in career earnings.
His most notable stakes wins include the Newbridge Credit Union Loughbrown Stakes, Bathwick Tyres Greenham Stakes (Group 3) and the Dylan Thomas E.B.F. Tetrarch Stakes (Group 3).
Verbal Dexterity has a low Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® score but his Behavior Index makes him competitive.
Honorable mention goes to COAT OF ARMS (60-1) and LOXLEY (12-1). With an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®, Coat of Arms was a yearling (Hip 446) I liked in session three at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. However, he’s yet to live up to his breeding and he’ll need to step up his game.

Welcome To The 21st Century Thoroughbred: Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® Software Tabs Keeneland Sales Graded Stakes Winners, Kentucky Derby Qualifiers

By Calvin L. Carter and Dallas Carter
©2017 Calvin L. Carter. All rights reserved.

The ability to know the potential of a horse before he goes to the breeding shed, sales ring or race track is of utmost importance.
Classic Champion Thoroughbreds, LLC – a new vision, standard of excellence for an old industry – is an innovative bloodstock consulting firm and leader in cutting-edge software analysis of Thoroughbred breeding, sales and race potential. The empirical data gathered by the robust power of the Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® software easily shows which horses have the potential to be quality stakes winners or classic champions.
In 2016, Classic Champion Thoroughbreds profiled 101 yearlings listed in the Keeneland September Sale. Each of those profiled yearlings had a grade ranking of an A+ or A.
Now, there are numerous, promising two year olds in training from that sales list. Also from the Keeneland sales list we now have two graded stakes winners: Free Drop Billy (G1-Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity) and Archaggelos (G3-Grey Stakes).
In addition, of the 16 horses currently listed on the 2018 Kentucky Derby Leaderboard, four (25%) of them are from our Keeneland Sales list.

STAKES WINNERS

Of the yearlings profiled at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale, we now have two graded stakes winners.

FREE DROP BILLY (Hip 104), a chestnut colt by Union Rags out of Trensa by Giant’s Causeway, is a half-brother to multiple group stakes winner Hawkbill and was purchased for $200,000 by agents Kempton/Berkelhammer for the Albaugh Family Stable. Here’s the video of Free Drop Billy in the Auction Ring.
Free Drop Billy is trained by Dale Romans and he has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®. In four starts, he’s compiled a 2-2-0 record including a second-place finish in both the Sanford Stakes (G2) and Hopeful Stakes (G1), and a runaway four-length win in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Stakes (G1). Here’s the video and chart call of His Grade One Futurity win:

In his two previous stakes races, Free Drop Billy came up just shy of victory. However, his breeding shows that he has the potential to excel as the races get longer and he did not disappoint stretching out in the Grade One Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
"We always thought (it would suit him)," Romans said in a Bloodhorse news story. "If you look at all his numbers on paper, every time they stretched a race a bit, he got a little bit better. Today I think we saw what he is really capable of."
Free Drop Billy has good breeding and I look for him to be a factor on the Kentucky Derby Trail.

ARCHAGGELOS (Hip 2138), a bay colt by Temple City out of Mien by Nureyev, is a half-brother to dual classic winner Big Brown and was a $200,000 RNA for consignor Monticule, LLC.
Archaggelos is trained by Michael Dickinson and he has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile®. In three starts, Archaggelos has compiled a 2-1-0 record including an authoritative 2¾ length win in the Grey Stakes (G3). Here’s a look at the video and chart call of his win in the Grey Stakes (G3).
Archaggelos “strode clear with authority to take the GIII Grey Stakes at Woodbine Sunday by two lengths,” according to a Thoroughbred Daily News article. He paid $21 for the win which was especially impressive as Dickinson wheeled him back off one week’s rest from breaking his maiden at Laurel Park on September 24.
I look for Archaggelos to improve off of that effort and he has the breeding to be a factor on the Kentucky Derby Trail.

KENTUCKY DERBY LEADERBOARD

Of the 16 horses currently listed on the 2018 Kentucky Derby Leaderboard, four (25%) of them are from our 2016 Keeneland Sales list.

FREE DROP BILLY (Hip 104): see write up above.

GOOD MAGIC (Hip 845), a chestnut colt by Curlin out of Glinda the Good by Hard Spun, was a $1 million session four sale topper purchased by agent Mike Ryan for E5 Racing. Here’s the video of Good Magic in the auction ring:

“He’s as good a Curlin as you’ll see,” said Ryan in a Bloodhorse news story.  “Curlin is Curlin. In my mind he’s as good as Tapit.”
Trained by Chad Brown, Good Magic has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he’s compiled a 0-2-0 record in two starts including a narrow half-length loss in the Grade One Champagne Stake. Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

In just his second start, Good Magic looked good finishing second in the Grade One Champagne and he has room to improve off of that effort. He has the breeding to be competitive and I look for him to be a factor as a three year old on the Kentucky Derby Trail.

HOLLYWOOD STAR (Hip 395), a dark bay or brown colt by Malibu Moon out of Hollywood Story by Wild Rush, was a $550,000 purchase by Kempton/Berkelhammer for the Albaugh Family Stable.
Hollywood Star has an A Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he’s compiled a 1-2-0 record in three starts for trainer Dale Romans including second-place finishes in both the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and Iroquois Stakes (G3). Here’s the video and chart call of the Iroquois:

Hollywood Star narrowly lost to Tabulator by three quarters of a length but he has the breeding to excel as the distances get longer and I look for him to be a factor on the Kentucky Derby Trail.

SOLOMINI (Hip 662), a chestnut colt by Curlin out of Surf Song by Storm Cat, was purchased for $270,000 by Zayat Stables, LLC.
Conditioned by Hall of Fame Trainer Bob Baffert, Solomini has an A+ Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® and he’s compiled a 1-1-0 record in two starts including a second-place finish in the FrontRunner Stakes (G1). Here’s the video and chart call of that race:

In just his second start, Solomini looked good to get up for the second-place finish. He has good breeding and I look for him to be a factor on the Kentucky Derby Trail.

*****

With over 22 years of experience studying Thoroughbreds, Calvin is the creator of the Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® which was developed into a software program by his brother, Dallas, in 2014.
The profile assigns each horse a numerical score and grade ranking which is the indicator of that horse’s potential. The higher the score, the more potential that horse has to become a quality stakes horse or classic champion.
In 2015, we made this video about the software program:

The profile software is a powerful analytical tool that takes the guesswork out of breeders making mating selections, it also evaluates the graded stakes and classic potential of horses bought at auction or in handicapping races.

BREEDING

● The Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® unlocks the secret of the Ancestral Herd influence.

● Is a valuable analytical tool that shows horse owners and breeders how a mare can upgrade or downgrade a stallion she is bred to through the profile score of the foal from that mating.

● Shows if the foal has the potential to be a quality stakes horse or classic champion.

● Shows horse owners how their entire herd of bloodstock can be upgraded by using the profile score to help them make the best breeding decisions resulting in less overbreeding and fewer potential equine welfare issues.

SALES, AUCTION

● The Classic Champion Thoroughbred Profile® is a valuable Thoroughbred sales analytical tool that shows buyers at auction how make the best decisions and investments when buying horses.

● Shows buyers at auction how to save on their time and monetary investments by helping them to zero in on the horses that have the best potential to become graded stakes winners or a Classic Champion Thoroughbred.
